Purpose

Collingwood Alternative School, an annex of Collingwood College, provides a program that addresses the needs of secondary students who may have a history of school refusal, behavioural/social problems and may need literacy/numeracy support or development. Specifically we aim for students to:

  • attend school regularly
  • experience success
  • learn cooperatively with others
  • set and achieve goals

 

What is taught

The school offers two programs:

Group A is an integrated studies program for students who are 15 years of age or under and who need assistance with literacy, numeracy and social skills.

Group B is for students 15 years of age or over needing to prepare themselves for training and work. The Certificate 1 in Planning for Employment and Training is conducted over a 12 month period

  Elective subjects for both groups includes:
  • Woodwork
  • Sport
  • Gymnasium
  • Outdoor Education
  • Cooking
  • Art/Photography
  • Graphics
  • Music
  • Magazine
  • Music

Program implementation

The program offers:
  • small class sizes
  • team teaching situations
  • Student Welfare support
  • links with community/welfare programs
  • access to computer technology
  • camps, excursions and recreation programs
  • work experience programs and career guidance

Discipline

The discipline policy is based on the
principles of:
  • The need for the safety of individuals and the group
  • The rights of students to learn,experience success, remain at school
    and enjoy their education
  • Respect for the environment

Assessment

Written reports are given semesterly. Ongoing contact is maintained with parents/guardians and students via meetings, phone-calls and letters to monitor academic and social progress.

Enrolments

Referrals from parents, Student Welfare Coordinators, Victoria Police, Dept. Human Services and other welfare agencies can be made throughout the year.

Telephone the school - 94193816  for an application form to be posted. Interviews are conducted after application forms have been received and reviewed.

Payment

A voluntary $50 payment is accepted to cover basic expenses. Camps and excursions may incur additional costs.

Collingwood Alternative School is at 7 Stanley Street, on the
corner of Cambridge Street. It is centrally located and easily
accessible by public transport.

This  newly refurbished facility provides up-to-date, purpose built areas for both core and elective subjects and is an exciting environment for young people to be involved in learning activities.
