Middle School News

Many students enter Collingwood College, from both local schools and those further away, at Year 7, as is the case for other local high schools.

Collingwood College is currently taking applications for enrolment for Year 6, 7, 8 and 9. Contact the College for a tour or request further information.

There is no requirement to have completed any special primary school program at Collingwood or elsewhere to enter Collingwood at Year 7, and the program offered is in line with the Victorian Essential Learning Standards. However, students can also enter a Steiner class if there is a place available.

Students can also enter at Year 6 if they are ready to move on from Primary School or Year 8 if they have tried one of the larger local schools and are seeking a smaller secondary setting.

With small class sizes, students and teachers know each other well and sometimes this is a preferred environment for students coming from smaller primary schools.

Chinese (Mandarin) is the LOTE taught at Collingwood and there is an excellent art, music and outdoor ed/camping program along with sports and phys ed. Year 6 students participate in the Kitchen Garden program.

Middle School staff approach teaching and student management in a way that recognises the developmental phase of adolescence. Staff believe that learning is best fostered through a partnership between the student, teacher and family.

Students learn best when they feel confident. Confidence comes from feeling valued as a person, and from rigorous, extending work which challenges and inspires. Staff work with individual student's learning styles, strengths and interests with an emphasis on higher thinking skills.
