automotive technology One of The Island’s longest running...
and most popular workshops automotive technology has provided the motor trades with many Island trained job-ready employees. Customers are able to book their vehicles in for repairs or service under the supervision of our senior mechanic. Customers pay the cost of parts used and add a donation for labour. Students moving through the automotive technology workshop have been successful in gaining apprenticeships in panel beating, automotive and engineering businesses. An Island student can obtain a VCAL qualification from this workshop.

building & construction Students in the building & construction workshop...
work on projects at The Island as well as off-site activities. The kitchen was built & installed by the students with gas fitting and electrical works handled by tradesmen. All building is done by the students under the supervision of our registered builder. An Island student can obtain a VCAL qualification from this workshop.

engineering Welding in its various forms...
and the construction of many large projects has been a major undertaking in the engineering workshop. Students are trained in the safe use of the welding equipment and shop machinery, and become skilled in the construction of a variety of projects. An Island student can obtain a VCAL qualification from this workshop.

furniture making In the furniture making workshop...
students are taught to use a variety of hand tools and learn the basics of furniture construction. Correct use of tools and development of useful handskills are a big part of this workshop
and safety with tools is a major learning outcome. Students complete projects under the supervision of our cabinet maker/joiner. An
Island student can obtain a VCAL qualification from this workshop.

horticulture Regular garden maintenance and landscaping...
are available to customers from our horticulture team. Students
are trained in the use of all garden tools and in correct plant care
& lawn mowing. There is no VCAL available for this workshop, though certificates can be studied at Burnley 'Horticulture' College.

hospitality Run by a qualified chef...
the hospitality program is one of The Island’s most popular workshops. Catering daily for more than 40 people this workshop produces meals of the highest quality and variety. Students participate in all aspects of safe food handling & kitchen practices and learn the value of nutritious food and how to prepare meals from scratch. An Island student can obtain various VCAL qualifications from this workshop.

literacy & numeracy As part of its VCAL program, The Island offers...
the Certificate in General Education for Adults (CGEA), which is undertaken with our Literacy & Numeracy instructor.
