Principals Report

URGENT Community Notice

The College Council has become aware that the college has a serious traffic management issue. I am currently acting on behalf of the council to work with Tara Watson (Parent) and City of Yarra Representatives to develop a traffic safety plan that services the needs of local residents, local businesses and our school community.

Tara and I will meet with representatives of Council next Tuesday and we will begin to plan the development of a strategic plan for the school that will give consideration to the travel needs of our community. A whole of community approach is needed if we are to ensure the safety of every student entering and leaving our college.

Student Achievement- Top Design: I congratulate Oliver Read (Class 11 of 2012) whose Folio for Studio Arts has been selected for this year’s Top Design Exhibition which will be officially opened on Friday 15 March at the Melbourne Museum. Oliver’s talent was evident through the work that he exhibited in the School Entrance and it is no surprise that he has been recognised through the VCE Season of Excellence.. I wish Oliver all the very best as he completes his year 12 studies. I also offered Oliver the Principal’s Arts Excellence Award whereby the school offers to purchase the works of a selected student’s works for our school archives.2013-2014 Premier’s Spirit of ANZAC Prize – Call for Entries: Applications for the 2013-2014 Premier’s Spirit of ANZAC Prize are now open. The Prize is open to students in Year 9 and Year 10 and I invite all of our Middle School students to consider this opportunity and embrace the challenge. The Prize inspires young people to explore the ethos displayed by the ANZACs at Gallipoli and the Western Front and reflect on how those values apply in Victorian communities today. State finalists will have the opportunity to travel on all-expenses paid overseas study tour to sites of military and cultural significance to Australian servicemen and women. The study tour will take place during the Term 1 school holidays in 2014. In addition, regional finalists will participate in a study tour within Australia.

Entry forms and further information can be obtained from

The competition closes on Friday 18 October 2013 and the lodgement of entries is encouraged throughout the year.

Teachers Industrial Campaign:

There has been no further progress on negotiations to date. Therefore the information conveyed in the last edition of the Community Newsletter remains current. Let’s hope the new Premier  has more respect for the work of teachers.

Overseas Students Excursion :

I had the pleasure of taking 8 of international students to an overnight beach trip last weekend to Venus Bay.  Their joy and thrill in experiencing the beautiful beaches and coastline made me realise how we take such natural wonderments for granted. We spent an afternoon collecting Pippis and we had a great stir-fry that evening followed by the traditional BBQ next day. Aaron described Walkerville as “the most beautiful place on earth” and every student begged me to allow a return visit. A great weekend was had by all.

SRC Training:

Congratulations to all the SRC representatives and past leaders who completed their training day last Friday. It was an amazing sight to see the young and old mixing it up in a range of activities designed to encourage team building and peer support. Well done Liria and Rhiannon. I look forward to working with this very vibrant team of young leaders.

I welcome Anthony Crowley as a new parent member of school council.  I would also like to thank Campbel Gome for his support as school Council president over the past 12 months and Michael Stewardson for his minute taking and highly active role in some strategic work with the Science Specialism. Michael will return  hopefully as a co-opted member this year to continue this work.

The first 50% instalment for the Essential items was due on Feb 8th and the second instalment is due at the end of term on March 28th. This is the same date for the second 50% for  Instrumental Music fees.
