Where did our Welcome Picnic go?

Families and teachers missed getting together at the Welcome Picnic this year due to the Teacher’s Union work bans. Under normal circumstances, the Parents Association would quickly step in and organise an alternative event so we could all catch up after the holidays and welcome new families to our community. Unfortunately, over the last couple of years the Parents Association has become somewhat informal and now consists of only a handful of parents – we have reached a point of having no elected office bearers, registered membership or procedures.

Our community has worked hard to build up the Spring Fair into the magnificent event that it is. We have rejuvenated the Thursday Markets and secured excellent fundraising Cake Stalls and Sausage Sizzles external to the school which bring in valuable funds. At the Spring Fair last year we raised nearly $40,000 which has been allocated to whole school projects such as an indigenous studies program, Chinese Cultural education, recycling programmes, theatre upgrades and a new scholarship program as well as equipment for school excursions and camps. The Thursday Market has generated hundreds of dollars for individual classes to use at their discretion for such things as subsidising excursions for disadvantaged students and purchasing extra equipment.

The work we do benefits all of our children in the school. It also develops and enriches our community and creates a wonderful support base for families. In order to continue our good work we need more people involved in the Parent Association.

To facilitate this, everyone is invited to a shared dinner and Parents Association information session aimed at revitalising the Parent Association. All are welcome and we encourage you to come along, catch up with friends and welcome new families at the same time.

In order to achieve this we need an interim committee. At the Parent Association information session, nominations will be requested for this. Then the committee will meet to:

  •   look over and confirm the draft Constitution (see below)
  •   make any additions/amendments needed
  •   follow the procedures in the DEECD regulations (outlined below) to formalise the process.Following this, the Parents Association can be opened for membership and an AGM called. At the AGM, the committee positions will be re-nominated and formally voted upon by members. Then we can get back to doing the good work we have always done.We are looking forward to seeing you there.

    Tina Wilkins (3/4BK) • Anna McKie (5MS) • Dallas Pitttock (3/4BK)  • Mary Gardiner (10B) • Marion Halpin (10B) • Yukima Cameron (1BP)
