Coburg North Farmers’ Market

The Coburg Farmers’ Markets will be held on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month at Coburg North Primary School. School Principal, Helen Zull, is excited to be hosting the market. “Our school has such wonderful grounds and a farmers market is a fantastic way to extend the use of our facilities,” says Mrs. Zull. “We hope that our market becomes a real part of the fabric of the Coburg Community, and brings people together to enjoy the fabulous food on offer.”

Forming a natural extension to Coburg North Primary School’s well regarded Health and Wellbeing program, the market has the important accreditation from the Victorian Farmers’ Market Association. As a customer, this means you have the assurance that you are buying fresh seasonal produce directly from the person who produced it.

The Coburg Farmers’ Market is a new venture for Melbourne Farmers’ Markets, which is long established at Collingwood Children’s Farm, Abbotsford Convent, Gasworks Arts Park and Veg Out, St Kilda. Their most recent start at Fairfield Primary School has been up and running for almost a year. The Coburg market will build on this alliance, bringing great produce to Coburg such as Plains Paddock Lamb, certified fresh organic veggies from Gippsland and organic chocolate from Coburg!.

The Coburg Farmers Market will be managed by local Brunswick resident Shirley Billing, who has been involved for many years in running the award winning Gasworks Farmers’ Market in Albert Park. Shirley is excited about bringing an accredited farmers’ market to her neighbourhood. “I love the free range shopping experience. You can catch up with friends and make a choice about the food you eat. It’s great for the community.”

There will be a great range of produce and artisan foods on offer at every market and stallholders will include growers of seasonal fruit and vegetables including organics and heirloom varieties. Specialties such as berries and garlic will be available in summer, apples and nuts in autumn, citrus and potatoes in winter and asparagus and cherries in spring. Then there’s a range of free-range meats, milk and cheeses, baked goods, olive oil, preserves, honey, wine, bagels, seedlings, flowers and fruit juices.

On board for the first market are loads of stalls including: Veggies from Hazeldeane Organics, Boisdale Farm and Wild Dog Spuds, Fresh Honey, King Valley Pies, Myrtleford butter, Inverloch free range eggs, Greenvale Farm free range pork, Plains Paddock Lamb, Gippsland Pasture Fed Beef, Goldfields Cheese, Mhyree Goats, Darryl’s free range turkeys, Five n’ Dime Bagels, Flinders Sourdough, fresh Pistachios and Walnuts, Kingfisher Citrus, Three Bridges Apples, Mushrooms, Wines, Olives and Olive Oil, Preserves, Natural Dog Food for our furry friends and live chooks from City Chicks for your backyard farm.

And it just wouldn’t be a Melbourne without great coffee, chai and brekkie while you shop!
