Tournament of Minds

Last year, for the first time, Collingwood College entered the Tournament of Minds.  We fielded 2 teams – primary and secondary – and they both did very well.  Teams had to choose a long term challenge from the areas of Maths and Engineering, Humanities, Social Sciences and Technology, and then had 4 weeks to come up with their solution to the problem presented in a 10 minute  ‘creation’ with no input from anyone except their fellow team members.  It was a hectic 4 weeks and a huge learning curve for everyone involved.

Last week we started our TOM (Tournament of Minds) club which will feed into our TOM teams this year.  Students will be working on different presentation skills they can bring to the team when the long term challenge starts at the beginning of next term.  Some of the presentation skills that are allowed are puppetry, Puppets, Multi media, Masks, Mime/nonverbal communication, Verse/song, Sound effects, Soundscapes, Magic tricks, Clowning, Dance/creative movement, Speech style/language/accent, Costumes/props/sets, Genre – soap, western, opera, thriller, science fiction, film noir etc, Humour – slapstick, farce, absurd, melodrama, physical

If you have any expertise in any of the above presentation skills and you would be will to share them on a Monday lunch time, please let me know!

We’ll be calling for team members towards the end of term.  Students will need to write a letter to me outlining what skills they can bring to their TOM team (and we are looking for everything from film maker to hard worker!) and a commitment to coming to all practice sessions and the tournament itself which is usually on a Saturday.  You are welcome to call/email me if you have any questions about this activity.
