Last Wednesday we held our Prep/1/2 Family Maths Afternoon.  It was a great afternoon with many families coming to share some maths learning together.  After a lovely afternoon tea the serious work began.  How many snakes were in the jar? (estimation) How much did the pumpkin weigh? (measurement) Whose football team was the most popular (making graphs) and what pets live with you (Venn diagrams).  Families chose from various activities set up around the library and ‘had a go’.  How many ways could three cars fit in a garage?  How many turns did it take to draw a beetle?  ‘Make to 10’ Fish and many more.  After announcing the winner of the snake competition (Katherine from ¾ was the lucky winner – she got closest to 117 snakes with her guess of 116) the afternoon came to a close.  A number of families requested copies of the activities to use at home (as a maths teacher that made me very happy!) and I will attempt to put them up as a link on the Collingwood College website.  Thank you to all the families for coming and making it such an enjoyable afternoon,  Also to all those who contributed to the delicious afternoon tea (and the cleaners for the vacuuming afterwards!) and staff who contributed their time as well.  We’re all looking forward to the 3/4/5/6 Family Maths Night coming up this Wednesday the 31st July (not August as I put in the last e-news!)
