Holocaust Excursion

The students from 7A and I went to a wonderful exhibition which focused on the Holocaust   last Friday. The students were lucky enough to not only view and read many different stories from this distressing period of History, but also to hear first-hand the experiences from an actual Holocaust survivor. You could have heard a pin drop as many tragic details were shared. The reason the class went there was because we had looked at the Holocaust through one of our novel studies this year, (Once by Morris Gleitzman) and this extension activity was certainly well received and valued by the class. The sensitivity with which the speaker shared his story impacted greatly on the students (and their English teacher whose tears flowed freely)

As sad as the subject matter was, there was no doubt that the students walked away impressed that they had met and experienced ‘living History’ Also there was a great emphasis and acknowledgement of the assistance that was offered by a number of brave people at the time who risked their own lives to help the victims of this terrible period of persecution.

The main message was to be strong in your resolve and not to stand by and witness bullying or any other atrocity without trying to help. To have the courage to care enough to help where you can…..a very powerful message that hopefully will not be forgotten by the students. I believe that the students walked away feeling sad, but at the same time, empowered.
