Writing Workshops with Leanne Hall

Wednesday 16 April, Collingwood

Library | Bookings essential

Join Leanne Hall, author of the Text Prizewinning This Is Shyness and its sequel Queen of the Night, for two special writing workshops. You are welcome to attend either workshop or both. Open to young people aged 12 to 18.

Weird Accounts and Strange Tales | 1.30pm–2.30pm

Using Pu Song Ling’s classic seventeenth-century collection Strange Tales From a Chinese Studio as a starting point, Leanne will discuss short and weird stories, unusual newspaper articles and popular urban myths. Participants devise their own Strange Tale to pitch to the group and plan the steps they need to take to turn it into a fully-fledged short story.

Book here.

Creating Characters | 3.30pm–4.30pm

In this workshop participants create a character from Leanne’s lucky dip photo bag, and then work at placing their character in the right story. Participants discuss their character profiles; how to challenge, expose and exploit their character’s weaknesses; and work on creating unique voices and dialogue for their characters

Book here.
