Last week both Year 8 classes participated in an evening where they showcased projects they had worked on for the last few months. Decision making, research, time application,  and eventually presenting to an enthusiastic audience of their parents was the   This project was one that the  students took to with enthusiasm and energy as it was an open ended piece of their own choosing. Students had the freedom of deciding on any subject that appealed to them. With purpose and intent in mind, they set about planning, building, designing, creating, researching, drafting, and eventually showcasing their efforts to their most supportive audience.

Both Tuesday and Thursday nights were amazing! The students from both classes presented their achievements with pride, energy and enthusiasm.  Even though some students faced these nights with nervousness and trepidation, their final performance was one to be proud of! Projects were ready, explanations detailed, voices well projected, slide shows interesting, built objects displayed, and questions answered from the audience confidently and appropriately.

Smiles were everywhere, both from the receptive audiences and proud students, to  the relieved teachers that almost all had gone according to plan. There were some minor glitches in the process of presenting, but the students certainly held their own and carried on in a most commendable manner. Each individual student followed their passion and interests and that certainly came to the fore on the nights.

Both Charlotte and I were really delighted with the students’ attitude towards this entire project. It was so satisfying watching the evolving of this task. So much was gained by the students in this whole process, no doubt making it a wonderful Learning Task with very clear educational merit.

To see the students after the presentation of their projects and the next day, certainly made this work requirement one of the most successful, practical lessons in the Year 8 Curriculum.

A Wonderful Night!
